| We believe that
Mad Hatter Ranch is one of the top producing elk ranches in the
world. Every year over 90% of our cows are
artificially inseminated to the best bulls available. Animals are
carefully selected and paired to produce a new genetically superior
generation of elk. DNA testing on every animal on the ranch, since the
start, has helped us to become a leader in the genetic improvement of
this species. Years of extensive records have allowed us to evaluate and
breed for the traits needed to insure both economic value as well as the
health of these magnificent animals.
Today we are working hand in hand with
the Cervid Research and Recovery Institute to develop elk that are
immune to Chronic Wasting Disease. This disease's potential to decimate the entire
population of deer and elk on this continent makes CWD the most
important issue facing the domestic elk industry and wild herds alike.
Our goal, together with CRRI, is to develop an immune strain of elk, while
retaining their natural characteristics as well as important economic
traits.
